Kennedy Settje and Kanyon Held are Students of the Month

By: Aubrie Hanna, a sophomore at Leigh High School

Each month during a school year, two students are chosen to receive the “Student of the Month” award, and this December, the recipients were seniors Kennedy Settje and Kanyon Held. The students chosen to earn this award are nominated by teachers for their good acts in the classroom and extracurriculars.

Kennedy Settje, a senior, is the daughter of Kristi and Chad Settje of Creston.  She is the granddaughter of Judy and the late Gary Blessen of Creston, Mike and Cindy Settje of Leigh and Sue and Tom Kabes of Leigh.  She is the great-granddaughter of LaVern and Joyce Wendt of Leigh and Stan and Marilyn Settje of Leigh.

She participates in many extracurricular activities, including basketball, volleyball, track, FCCLA, journalism, Youth Advisory Committee, One-Act, and 20 Below. Her favorite class this year is Culinary Arts. Her future plans are to pursue something in the healthcare-related field, although she has yet to decide what college or specific career she wants to go into.

Kennedy’s favorite activities outside of school are spending time with friends and family and going shopping.

This is Kennedy’s third time winning the student of the month award.  “Winning this award is always a good feeling,” Settje said. “It feels good to know that the hard work I put into my studies and extracurriculars is being noticed throughout the school.”

This is what Kennedy’s teachers said about her:

“Kennedy is an excellent student. She excels in her extracurriculars, she is very helpful around the school, and she is a good role model to our younger kids.”

“Kennedy is an extremely hard-working student. She sincerely values her academics.  She is also kind to everyone.”

The second recipient is senior Kanyon Held.  Kanyon is the son of Kip and Kamin Held, and the grandson of Dennis and Linda Hillen and Lorraine and the late Robert Held. He participates in football, basketball, FFA, journalism, and One-Act. His favorite class in school is math. Kanyon plans to attend Wayne State College and major in Construction Management or Agribusiness.

His favorite activity outside of school is hunting.

Kanyon has won this award twice, and he said “It feels good to win this award.”

This is what Kanyon’s teachers said about him:

“Kanyon works hard, he has a good attitude, and is helpful when needed. He is active in school activities and is very involved in our community.”

“Like Kennedy, Kanyon is a senior leader in our school.  He excels in sports as well as fine arts, like One-Act play.  He works very hard and does an excellent job representing our school.”
