Patriots Cage the Monarchs

By: Carter Brabec, a freshman at Leigh High School

Both the girls’ and boys’ JV and Varsity basketball teams hosted the David City Aquinas Monarchs at home in Clarkson on January 4th.

The JV girls’ and boys’ game started at 4:30, but the younger Pats groups didn’t have a good night, losing to both of the Monarch JV teams. The girls’ score was 13-33, and the boys’ JV score was 18-37.

The varsity girls’ game started around 6 pm, and this was a must-win game for the girls, as the Monarchs entered the match-up with a 1-8 record.

The Patriots had a great night beating the Monarchs by 26 points.  The game started off slow for the Pats, but after the first quarter was over, they started the second quarter by outscoring the Monarchs 18-2. That is pretty much how the rest of the game went for the Pats.

The final score was a huge win, 59-33, which brought the Patriot record to 7-3.

Assistant Coach Jen Remmereid said, “We played a solid game against Aquinas. This was coming off playing well in the Shelby Holiday Tournament, so we have some momentum going into the second half of our season.”

Senior Kennedy Settje said, “The game against David City went very well. We had a slow start, but after the first quarter we came out with a lot more energy. We were able to use our energy to create turnovers and turn them into plays on the offensive end.”

The Patriot girls were led by Chloe Hanel, who had 25 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 10 steals on the night. Kennedy Settje also had a really good night with 16 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal.

The varsity boys’ game started around 7:30. They also destroyed the Monarchs by 19 points with the score ending up 57-38. This win broke a record in Patriot history for the most wins in a row by the Patriot boys’ basketball team.

Junior Kyle Kasik said, “Aquinas was a tough team that we had to be ready for.  Our first quarter was a strong start to the game and led us to a solid win against a solid team.”

Kasik had a great game, ending up with 16 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal. All the other players had a good game too, and pretty much everyone got in to the game.

Head Coach Jeff Bachman said, “I was very pleased with our effort. We picked up a nice win against a quality opponent. So far this season I have been very pleased with our progress. These boys show up, work hard, and are building a quality team.”

The boys’ record is now 8-1.
