The Clarkson-Leigh Patriots boys’ basketball team had two games for the eighth week of the season. They took on the Lutheran High Northeast Eagles on January 18, 2022, and the Twin River Titans on January 20, 2022.
In what the boys knew would be a challenging match-up on the 18th, the Patriots and the Eagles both came into the game with a record of 11-1. This was an away game for the Patriots in Norfolk.
When asked about the Lutheran High Northeast game, assistant coach Andrew Faltys said, “This was a very intense ball game. There were a lot of ups and downs. We found ourselves behind in the first half by 10 points, but the boys went on a run right before halftime and took a two point lead at the break. We fell short against the Eagles, but the kids battled and never gave up.”
The game started off tight and stayed close throughout the whole first quarter. After one quarter of play, the game was tied at 11.
The second quarter was just as close as the first. The Patriots outscored the Eagles by two in the second quarter, 16-14, with their late second-quarter run. This put the Patriots up by 2 headed into halftime.
After half, the Eagles came out strong in the third quarter going up by 10 at one point. LHNE outscored the Patriots 16-10 in the third, making the score 37-41 Eagles at the end of three quarters.
A close fourth quarter led to the Patriots outscoring the Eagles by two 11-9. Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough, making the final score 48-50 LHNE. The Eagles handed the Patriots their second loss of the season, extending their own record to 12-1.
Junior Kyle Kasik led the scoring against the Eagles with 16 points on the night. Seniors Carter Hanel, Jarred Novotny, and Eli Hays added 10 apiece. Hanel led the team in rebounds with 12.
Two days later, on Thursday, Patriots took on the Twin River Titans in a home game in Leigh on the 20th. The Patriots came into the game 11-2, and the Titans came into the game with a winless record. The Patriots got off to a fast start, going up 26-3 in the first quarter.
Clarkson-Leigh extended their lead, outscoring the Titans 11-4 in the second quarter, making the score 37-7 headed into halftime.
Coming out of the half, the Patriots continued to add to their lead, scoring 21 points to Twin River’s 8. The Patriots also outscored the Titans in the fourth quarter 9-4 making the final score of the game 67-19. The Patriots extended their record to 12-2 on the year.
Junior Mason Whitmore led the scoring against the Titans with 11 points. Kasik added 10 and senior Logan Schroeder contributed 9. Much like the Pender game a week prior, the Twin River game saw the whole bench get in on the action.
When asked about the Twin River game, senior Eli Hays said, “It was good to get back on the winning side after the loss after LHNE. It was good to get another win.”
