LHS Speech Team Competes in First Meet

By: Dee Rivera, a junior at Leigh High School

A new year means a new speech team for 2022! Ms. Madison Gall is the coach for the speech team, and this is her first year coaching. There are a total of 10 people who are involved in speech for Leigh this year, and the season is underway!

This year’s team consists of freshmen Brianne Kuhr, Keeley Campbell, and Paige Kurpgeweit; sophomores Sage Fernau, Gabriel Pinkston, Morgan Bunner, Aubrie Hanna, Pheobe Mayner, and Taya Hambleton; and senior Aiden Miller.

The speech team traveled to Boone Central on January 22, 2022, for their first meet of the year.

Sage Fernau, a sophomore stated, “It was our first meet, and overall I think we did really well! I always love the speech season because being part of speech is giving me skills I know I will need later in life. I think we’ve started out great putting in the work, and some of us brought home medals, which was exciting!”

Coach Madison Gall expressed her excitement as well.

“It was a great first meet and everyone was excited to compete!” Mrs. Gall said. “I look forward to the rest of the season!”

At the end of the meet freshman, Paige Kurpgeweit placed 4th in JV Poetry, and sophomore Sage Fernau placed 6th in JV Serious.
