Kevin Becerril and Dee Rivera Win “Student of the Month”

By: Isaac Rodenburg, a senior at Leigh High School

Each month during the school year, two students are chosen to receive the “Student of the Month” award, and this February, the recipients were senior Kevin Becerril and junior Deandrea Rivera. The students chosen to earn this award are nominated by teachers for their good acts in the classroom and extracurriculars.

Kevin’s parents are Juan and Luz Becerril.  His grandparents are Maria and the late Pablo Becerril and Alvina and Manuel Tejeda.

Kevin reports that his extracurricular activities officially are One-Act and he also participates in Youth Advisory Committee.  Unofficially, Kevin says he is basically the students section at all the Patriot games.  Just him.  And he says he is basically the mascot of the school too.

Kevin’s favorite part of the school day is aiding in PE for Mr. Cash because he gets to aide for his little brother Jose’s class, and that makes his day.  Outside of school, Kevin’s hobbies are making excellent food at the mini mart and hanging out with his friends on the weekends.

After college, Kevin plans on going to the Northeast to earn his Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice.

This is the third time Kevin has won this award over the years.

“I feel like winning this award one last time was a nice thing to happen to complete my senior year before I graduate.  It is very much appreciated.”

Here is what Kevin’s teachers said about him:

--“Kevin always works and has a great attitude. He is a great role model for the elementary kids. I feel lucky to have him as an aid and as a student in this school.

--“Kevin is just a great all-around kid. He is friendly and always has a positive attitude. At a game recently at BRLD, he went up to the town cop who was in uniform, and wearing a “Vietnam Vets’ hat. Kevin shook this man’s hand and thanked him for serving.”

Our second Student of the Month is Deandrea Rivera, better known as Dee.

Dee’s parents' names are Nicole Sandoval and Adrian and Ana Zacarias. Her grandparents' names are Kathleen Elsner and Ronald Elsner.

This year Dee participates in basketball, FCCLA, FBLA, stream team, and choir. She also participates in YAC.  Her favorite subject to study is Anatomy.

Outside of school, Dee likes to read. After high school she wants to attend Wayne College and to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and later become a therapist.

Dee has won this award two times now. She says, “It feels like an honor to win Student of the Month again, and it feels nice to know my hard work is paying off.”

Here is what Dee’s teachers said about her:

“Dee is always in a positive mood and gives her best effort all the time. She is also helpful and kind to everyone.

“Dee is very kind, helpful and really beginning to excel in school. She is always in a good mood and is willing to help the staff or her classmates.”

            Congratulations to Kevin and Dee!
