GBB Finishes Regular Season 18-6

By: Izzy Hollatz, a freshman at Leigh High School

This past week, the girls’ basketball team had two games on Tuesday, February 8th and Thursday, February 10th. They faced off against Pierce on Tuesday and Stanton on Thursday.

The Bluejays came into the Tuesday game with a 16-6 record, and the Mustangs entered with a 9-11 record. The Bluejays had the same record as the Patriots with a 16-6 record, so they knew this game would be a challenge. Stanton did not have quite as good a record, but the Patriots knew they couldn’t play down to their level.

Against the Bluejays, the Patriots took the lead quickly in the first quarter, 8-3. After this quarter, they kept their momentum for the rest of this half. The 3rd quarter was a little slow for the Patriots, but an amazing fourth quarter led them to a win.

The girls were making great shots and forcing turnovers for the other team. The final score was 42-31.

Overall, Chloe Hanel and Kennedy Settje led the team in points with 18 points each. Korbee Wendt led the team in rebounds with 7. Close behind was Hanel with 6.

When asked about the Pierce game, Head Coach Matt Murren said, "The girls came into the game locked in and played like it all night. It was one of our best defensive performances that we've put together all year. We rebounded the basketball well and limited any second chance opportunities for them. Offensively, I thought we did a good job of attacking when there and making the reads. Pierce is a great defensive team, so they made it tough to score the ball, and I thought our kids did a great job being aggressive offensively."

After this great win, the Patriots played another game in Leigh on Thursday against the Stanton Mustangs. They wanted to get another win for the week. The Patriots led for the entire game, and they played an amazing game. They had momentum through the first three quarters, but the Mustangs outscored them in the fourth quarter.

Even after this 4th quarter, the Patriots came out with a win. The final score for the game against Stanton was 56-32.

Chloe Hanel had another great game and scored 20 points. She was followed closely by Kennedy Settje with 16 points.

Jessica Hoffman, a junior at Leigh, was asked about the Stanton game, and she said, “We came out and played hard, locking down on both defense and offense. We played really well, and overall it was a good win going forward into sub-districts.

These two brought the girls’ final regular season record to 18-6!
