Patriots Win C1-6 Sub-District, Qualifying for Sub-State

After finishing the regular season with a 17-6 record and securing the number one seed in the Class C1-6 sub-district, the Clarkson-Leigh Patriots hosted the Lakeview Vikings on February 22, 2022 after the Vikings defeated the Scotus Shamrocks the night before.
“It was really great to earn that 1 seed and host our games at home in Leigh,” Head Coach Jeff Bachman said.
Even though the Vikings were the #4 seed in the sub-district, the Patriots knew they were a much better team than their record showed, and that it would not be an easy game.
An even first quarter of both teams going back and forth ended with the score 12-10 Clarkson-Leigh. The Patriots took off in the second quarter, though, outscoring the Vikings by 10 points, 15-5. A good second quarter gave the Patriots a 27-15 lead at halftime.
The Vikings wasted no time in the third quarter chipping away at the Patriot lead. After a bad defensive and offensive quarter for the Patriots, the Vikings outscored the Patriots 14-2. This tied the game going into the fourth.
Lakeview continued their offensive success in the fourth quarter, going up by 5 at one point in the half. The Patriots continued to battle and came back to tie the game. With two seconds left in the game, senior Carter Hanel put in a game-winning shot after a lob to him on an inbounds play. This won the game for the Patriots 45-43!
Along with scoring the game-winning shot, Hanel also led the team in rebounds with 9. Junior Kyle Kasik led the scoring for the Patriots with 16 points.
But the Patriots’ work wasn’t done yet.
After Logan View/Scribner-Snyder upset North Bend in the following game on Tuesday night, the Patriots were set to play the Logan View/Scribner-Snyder Raiders on Thursday, February 24, again in Leigh.
The Patriots continued their success into Thursday night. They got up to a fast start, going up 8-4 in the first and finishing the quarter ahead 13-8. The Raiders came back in the second quarter, outscoring the Patriots 11-9 making the score going into the half 22-19.
Coming out of the half, the third quarter was close, but the Patriots outscored the Raiders 10-9. The Patriots took control of the fourth quarter outscoring the Raiders by 6 scoring 12 to the Raiders 6 making the final score 44-34 Patriots.
Kasik again led the scoring with 14 points. Hanel pulled down 11 rebounds. Senior Eli Hays also made things happen with 7 assists and 4 steals.
“We got two great wins against two really good teams,” Coach Bachman said. I was very proud of the fight our guys showed and how we overcame adversity. I always truly appreciate the support we receive from our student body and communities. It was an awesome experience!”
Junior Mason Whitmore said, “We knew going into both games that it was going to be a fight and we knew that both teams weren’t going to back down. We punched our ticket to sub-state, picking up two good victories along the way.”
This brings the Patriots’ record to 19-6!
