By: Kennedy Settje, a senior at Leigh High School

In a battle of the brains, the Leigh High School Quiz Bowl team placed second at the East Husker Conference Quiz Bowl that took place on Monday, March 28 at Pender High School.

The runner-up team consisted of seniors Kanyon Held, Audie Tejkl, and Calvin Wemhoff; junior, Kyle Holmberg; and sophomore, Aubrie Hanna.

Senior, Audie Tejkl, said, “We worked well as a team and used our strengths well and were able to get second place in a tough competition.”

The first round of pool play was against Scribner-Snyder. The Patriots prevailed and then matched up with Lyons-Decatur in the second round. After defeating Lyons-Decatur, their winning streak ended when they next lost to Pender in the final round of pool play.

After a fairly successful pool play, Leigh earned the 6 seed for the 15-school tournament. This matched them up against Bancroft-Rosalie in the 1st round of the tournament. They won this match and advanced to the next round.

Leigh continued to be successful in the as they advanced. They played Clarkson in the 2nd round and Oakland-Craig in the 3rd round and won both of them. This led LHS to the championship game against Howells-Dodge.

Howells-Dodge ended Leigh's run in the tournament, and LHS finished runner-up in the competition.

Coach, Madison Gall said, “It was a fun evening watching the students compete academically against other schools in our conference! They did such a great job, and I am so proud of them!”
