VB Team Plays at State Fair!

The Clarkson-Leigh Patriots headed southwest for their season opener at the Bill
Marshall Volleyball Classic at the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island on Saturday, August 27th.
The goal of the tournament is to bring volleyball fans from across the state to the state
fair for quality volleyball. The Patriots were invited to play for the second year in a row. 15
teams played a total of 11 games throughout the day.
In addition to the Patriots, teams included Aurora, Grand Island Central Catholic, Broken
Bow, Grand Island Northwest, Pleasanton, Wilcox-Hildreth, Gretna, Grand Island Northwest,
Milford, Malcolm, Aurora, Lincoln Lutheran, Burwell, and South Loup-Callway.
This day of competition gives the Patriots a chance to play bigger schools that they
wouldn’t normally see.
Unfortunately, the Pats lost their first game of the day to Class C-1 Aurora, but they put
up a good fight and took it to three sets. The scores were 18-25, 27-25, and 19-25.
“I thought that we had a rough start in the Aurora game, but we pulled through and
played a great game in our next game against Milford!” said sophomore setter Izzy Hollatz
They turned around and won against Milford, another class C-1 school, in the second
game, defeating them 25-17, 19-25, and 25-19.
Junior Chloe Hanel led the team in kills in both games, with 15 against Aurora and 19
against Milford. Hollatz racked up 29 and 30 set assists respectively in both games. Gracie
Eisenmann, along with Hanel, led the team in digs in both games with many other players
chipping in for a great team effort.
“Saturday was a good experience and a great way to start our season!” said Head Coach
Becky Schneider. “The girls battled in both matches and did some really good things, especially
after we got some of the nerves out! Overall, splitting matches isn’t exactly what we wanted to
do, but it gave us some good insight on what we need to work on!”
The Patriots hope to see many fans throughout their games throughout the season this
year!
