Expanding Opportunities for Leigh Students!

LCS Wins Career Education Grant

Leigh Community Schools has some very exciting news to share! They were the
recipients of an over $80,000 Perkins reVision Action Grant that will allow them to expand their
STEM and Health Science Pathways!
Leigh FCS teacher Mrs. Megan Hillen filled out the reVISION Action Grant that
awarded Leigh Community Schools with $81,522 to be exact. This grant’s purpose is to
improve, modernize, and expand career and technical education. This grant will strengthen our
career education system by providing all of the students in our rural district with CTE (career and
technical education) opportunities.
Within the grant award period, Leigh Community School will implement two new
programs of study. Based on student interest and our local needs assessment, LCS will be
expanding its Agricultural Power, Structure and Technology program of study and establish a
Health Sciences program of study.
Mrs. Megan Hillen said, “The students at Leigh will benefit greatly from the funding
provided by this grant. The implementation of two new programs of study will provide our CTE
students the opportunity to acquire the skills needed to be successful in the career fields of
Health Science and Agricultural Power, Structure, and Technology. We are looking forward to
providing these opportunities for our students at Leigh High School.”
Leigh superintendent, Mr. Cole Fischer, added, “Thanks to the hard work and effort by
Mrs. Hillen, we are fortunate to get our STEM and Health Science pathways going.  This grant
will provide our students with a great opportunity to expand their career technical education right
in our building.  We have been working on partnerships with Central Community College and
Columbus Community Hospital within the programs, which could possibly expand to area
schools and students, with LCS being the main hub for those programs.  We will purchase 3 new
welders, 1 plasma cutter, and a robotic CNC computerized plasma cutter.  We also will receive a
full health science curriculum with a hospital bed included.  This is an amazing opportunity for
our students! Thanks again to Mrs. Hillen for her efforts!”
Through this grant, over $1 million was awarded altogether to 13 public schools,
community colleges, and educational service units. In addition to Leigh, other recipients
included Columbus Public Schools, Crete Public Schools, Ogallala Public Schools, Plattsmouth
Community Schools, Scottsbluff Public Schools, Sidney Public Schools, Bloomfield Community
Schools, Metro Community College, Western Nebraska Community College, ESU 2, and ESU 5.
