Juniors Hit the UNL Campus

Leigh High School Junior Class at UNL College Visit: Front Row (L to R): Michaela Hall, Sydney Geier, Hector Mendoza, Haden Held, Garrett Schroeder; Back Row: Luis Aguirre, Sydney Folken, Anthony Bruhn, Alex Machmueller, Brady Hathaway, Jason Ober, Mrs. Karen Hillen

To most high school juniors, college still seems light years away.  But in reality, it looms nearer than many students realize.  On March 14, the Leigh High School junior class got a taste of university life when the entire class traveled to Lincoln to tour the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus.

The tour was lined up by Mrs. Karen Hillen, guidance counselor.  The juniors voted as a class which institution they would like to visit, and they chose UNL.  UNL paid for the trip, including student meals, through a college access grant.

“The purpose of this visit was to expose the juniors to the college campus visit experience with hopes that they will continue to make other college visits in their pursuit to decide on their post-high school endeavors.  Visiting the UNL campus was a great opportunity for them to see a four-year, large university setting, so they can make some comparisons to our smaller, local two- and four-year colleges.”

During their visit, the juniors toured the city campus and east campus. Their guides provided them plenty of information about costs, housing, and different majors and programs, including where each is located.  They also viewed classrooms, dorm rooms, and recreational/weightlifting facilities.  They ate lunch in the cafeteria and even got a chance to try out the Dairy Store, an ice cream shop. And of course, no tour is complete without a stop inside Memorial Stadium.

One of the trip’s attendant’s, junior Alex Machmueller, said, The trip was a blast and was very informational. I made me think more about what I want to be and realize that UNL is a possibility for me to attend.
