Elementary Celebrates Grandparents’ Day

Elementary students enjoy cookies with their grandparents as part of the school-wide Grandparents' Day celebration.

As the saying goes, “God couldn’t be everywhere, so he created grandparents.”

On Friday, September 8, the Leigh Elementary School students set aside time to honor their grandparents in observance of Grandparents’ Day.  Grandparents of all students gathered at the elementary to enjoy activities, snacks, and time spent with their grandchildren.

Fifth grade teacher Mrs. Briana Wietfeld said, “I look forward to Grandparent’s Day every year. I love that our school celebrates this day with inviting our grandparents to school.”

This year’s school-wide theme at the elementary is about each person being special, or “There’s Only One You.” This provided the theme for the Grandparents’ Day activities.

The program started at 2:30 in the afternoon.  The Kindergarten through sixth grade opened the day with the song “No One Like You.”

Following the song, Mrs. Cindy Settje, third grade teacher, played piano for a game of “Name that Tune.” The grandparents had to guess what song was being played.

The 6th graders then read the book, “Only One You.” The activities ended with the song, “Do, Re, Mi,” sang once again by the K-6 students.

After the singing and games, the grandparents enjoyed cookies with their grandchildren.

The students could then take their grandparents to see their classroom after the snack.

“We had such a great turnout and the students loved seeing their grandparents and showing them around their school and classroom,” Wietfeld added.
