On Wednesday March 13, the Leigh Speech team traveled to Bancroft for the District Speech Contest.

Congratulations are in order for senior Alex Fischer. He earned a third-place medal in Extemporaneous Speaking, which qualified him for the State Speech Competition!

Holly Kuhr earned a fourth-place medal in Humorous Prose, just missing State by one placing.  Freshman Audie Tejkl earned a sixth-place metal in Humorous Prose. Alex Fischer also earned a sixth-place medal in Poetry.

Sophomore Alicia Holmberg did not place, but earned a Superior Rating.

Speech Coach Mr. Volquardsen said, "What a way to close out the 2019 LHS speech season…fog in the morning and flooding all day! The trip home from districts was interesting, fun, and a bit scary. Along with the excitement of having a state qualifier, there was also some heartbreak. No matter how the season ended, our “Fab Five” finished the season by representing themselves and our school very well. Congratulations to Alex Fischer for qualifying for state and earning a trip to Kearney on March 22nd. I am going to miss both of our seniors (Holly and Alex) next year. They have been a pleasure to coach. As for the others, they have brought me much pride this season. My heartfelt thank you to our whole team for the time, work, and dedication they put in this season."

To get ready for district speech, the speech team held a community speech performance. All of the speech team members performed their speeches. Holly Kuhr and Audie Tejkl performed their Humorous Prose pieces. Holly performed Mama’s Close Call and Audie performed What Ho! Alicia Holmberg performed her Serious Prose piece on To Kill a Mockingbird. Alex Fischer performed his Poetry piece about Viet Nam Poems and Aiden Miller performed his poetry on To This Day. Alex Fischer and Aiden Miller did their performance in Extemporaneous.

Senior Holly Kuhr said, “Speech Night is always fun to perform at so the community members and parents can enjoy our speeches. It helped us prepare for districts, which brought a lot of tough competition. Districts was a very long day, but I think we all performed our best!  Congrats to Alex for qualifying!”
