Student Opinion: Why You Should Drink Home-Brewed Coffee

When many people think of coffee, they think of elders sitting around a table chatting or the old myth that coffee stunts your growth. However, people may not know that home-brewed coffee has many benefits. As a coffee drinker myself, I’ve found that coffee is a great way to start off my day.

Coffee is one of the best ways to get a dose of caffeine. Yes, soda does give you caffeine, but it is accompanied with unhealthy chemicals and added sugar. Plain coffee has no added sugar and is completely natural.

Now I know what you’re thinking: “I don’t like the flavor of plain coffee.” Well, there are ingredients that sweeten coffee without adding sugar: cinnamon, vanilla extract, or unsweetened cocoa powder. Beware to not consume more than four cups of coffee a day because it could lead to a caffeine addiction.

Brewed-at-home coffee has many health benefits that could lead to a longer life. This includes protecting against brain disorders like Alzheimer’s disease and reducing the risk of prostate cancer. However, companies like Starbucks and Scooters, pack their coffee with added sugars and fats. Coffee from these companies might as well be called desserts. For example, a Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks contains fourteen grams of fat and fifty grams of sugar: a heart attack in a bottle! One regular cup of brewed-at-home coffee contains one calorie, zero grams of fat, and zero sugar.

Not only are these drinks that you buy from coffee shops unhealthy, but they are also very expensive. Coffee from coffee shops is around five dollars a cup. This means if you got a coffee every day for a month, you would be spending around $150; in my opinion, this a colossal waste of money. Plus, brewing your own coffee is not very difficult and doesn’t cost much either. A whole pot of coffee takes around five minutes to brew, and you can buy a coffee maker as cheap as twelve dollars.

Home-brewed coffee is a great choice if you are looking for a dose of caffeine and health benefits. However, coffee from coffee shops has the potential to ruin your health and your bank account. My advice? Save your money and invest in a good-old coffee pot!
