Student Opinion Column: Sports—Good for the Body and Soul

You don’t have to be the greatest athlete to participate in sports. There's so much more to sports than just winning. Although winning is a main goal for everyone, the importance of sports is so much bigger than that.

Taking part in sports is important for kids to do because it reduces stress, keeps you fit, makes your bones and muscles healthy, and improves your sleep. This isn’t even all though. For some, playing a sport makes them feel more involved and helps with their social skills. Playing sports can help people out in lots of ways they didn’t know existed.

If being very physical, intense, and aggressive isn’t something that interests you, you have other ways you can get involved. Join an extracurricular that doesn’t include those things. Join the cheer or dance team, or bowl. All of these options will allow you to gain self-confidence and get out of the house.

For me, I play sports because I love them. I enjoy spending time with my friends and seeing my growth throughout the years. Sports have allowed me to stay healthy and in shape and improve my social skills. I’ve branched out because sports have pushed me to do that. Seeing tons of different people throughout the year has allowed me to make new connections with people I didn’t know I would.

Sports can help you with both your physical health and mental health, and that’s why they are so important. Playing sports is an excellent way to build self-confidence, gain social skills, get in shape, and get a healthier body. It teaches important values such as dedication, responsibility, and patience.

To anyone who argues that sports don’t actually mean anything to kids’ futures, I disagree.   I know the lessons I have learned playing sports will stick with me forever.
