Honoring Our Veterans

Elementary students, high school students, veterans, and other community members were all at the Leigh High School gym at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11 for the Veteran’s Day Program.

The service began with the junior high band playing “Tenderfoot March.” Then director of ceremonies, John Bunner, gave a greeting.  This was followed by the Invocation by Pastor Adam Onken from Zion Lutheran Church.

The Pledge of Allegiance was lead by Girl Scout Troup 50-502 of Leigh and Troop Leader Chandra Kurpkeweit.

Staff Sgt. Delgado gave an address where he talked about his experiences in the service and the difference between serving today and serving in years past.

Next, Bunner announced the winners of the VFW Patriot’s Pen essay contest. From Leigh, in third place was Zach Mozola, second was Riana Groteluschen, and in first, earning a spot to compete in the district competition, was Alyssa Kasik.

Next on the program was the tribute to veterans by Janet Eisenmann of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Bunner then followed Staff Sgt. Delgado’s lead and discussed his perception of changes in the army from World War II to now.

The Benediction was delivered by Adam Onken, and the elementary students sang the servicemen’s medley and “Grand Old Flag.” The Junior High Band concluded the program by playing “The Star Spangled Banner” to complete the program.

After the program, when John Bunner was asked why Veteran’s Day is important he said, “ Veteran’s Day is an opportunity to remember the other people that we fought with, and it is a day to get together and rejoice.

“The veterans sacrificed their lives for their country,” Bunner continued, “and they deserve to be recognized for it.”
