In a test of academic wits and knowledge, 27 Leigh High School students traveled to Northeast Community College to join 1,500 other area students competing in the 33rd annual Northeast Scholastic Competition and Quiz Bowl on Wednesday, March 22.

Students must be recommended by their teachers to take part in the scholastic competition, and each student takes a test in their individualized area to see how they place among other students in northeast Nebraska.

Overall, 51 schools competed in the event in classes C and D. Wayne High School won the overall team competition for Class C, with Crofton and Pierce tied for second.

In Class D, where Leigh competed, O’Neill St. Mary’s claimed first-place honors for the third year in a row.  Howells-Dodge finished second.

From Leigh, senior Karmen Hake and junior Michaela Hall were champions in their respective categories.  Hall placed first in American History, and Hake finished first in Parenting/Child Development.

This is the second year in a row that Hall has finished first in her individual category.

For Hake, placing first means she will receive a $1,000 tuition waiver when she attends Northeast Community College next fall.

Other students who received top recognition included senior Megan Bahns placing 3rd in Literature, freshman Emma Labenz placing 4th in Algebra I, sophomore Kaegan Held placing 4th in Geography, junior Anthony Bruhn placing 4th in Body and Frame Dimension Diagnosis, and Hake also placing 4th in American Government.

Junior Haden Held placed 5th in Wellness/Sports/Physical Education, junior Hector Mendoza placed 5th in Algebra II, senior Luiz Mayorga placed 5th in Basic Construction, and Bahns finished 5th in English Composition.

Junior Sydney Folken finished 6th in Administrative Professional.

Mayorga commented on the day by saying, “Scholastic Day was a good time, and it was nice to see that so many of our students received recognition for their academic achievements.”

Congratulations to all of the Scholastic Day participants who placed in their events!
