Pre-Kindergarten Partners with Community Leaders
The Pre-Kindergarten students are involved in many school-community partnerships throughout the school year.
fMrs. Tiffany Cash teaches two classes, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Her morning class consists of 15 three-year-olds. Her afternoon class consists of 16 4-year-olds. Both classes visit the local library once a month to encourage literacy and language.
On Thursday, April 13, Sharel VonSeggern, the former director of the library, came to the school to visit the Pre-K classroom just before Easter to read “Corduroy’s Easter” by Don Freeman. After the book, she had planned some fun, Easter activities that included coloring and painting. Both classes enjoyed Easter-themed activities.
Mrs. Cash’s four-year-old class took a walk downtown to visit the grocery store on Thursday, April 13 as well. Co-owner Steve McKelvey gave them a tour of the store and explained how they unload groceries off of a semi. Another highlight of the trip was getting to learn how co-owner Don McKelvey makes his famous hot dogs, sausage, and jerky.
Cash said, “The students really enjoyed the store and library visits. They may not ask questions while they are there, but once they get back into the classroom, that’s all they can talk about. The partnership of the public library and the LCS Pre-K has had a great impact on the students. The community partnerships have been an excellent experience for the Pre-K students.”
