Student Opinion Column: Dimples are Amazing!
Smile and say cheese! This phrase has been uttered by photographers an infinite number of times to people posing for a picture because the long ‘e’ sound requires a person to draw back their lips and bare their teeth in a grin. For approximately a fifth of the population, a little indent by the corner of their mouth magically appears when they flash a big smile. What could that little indentation be? Dimples.
Simply put, dimples are amazing. They are a small depression in the flesh, either one that exists permanently, or one that forms in the cheeks when one smiles. I, for one, have a dimple on both cheeks when I smile. The one on the right side of my face is smaller than the one on the left, but it’s still there.
Many people who have dimples don’t like them. Perhaps this is because dimples are actually classified by doctors as a physical deformity. I, however, really like the little indentations in my two cheeks, and I can’t understand why anyone wouldn’t!
People with dimples are actually quite special. About only 20% of the world’s population is blessed with delightful dimples. The rest of the 80% just have to observe them and wish they possessed such cuteness! I am lucky to be blessed with a cute smile complete with dimples.
According to recent studies, there are actually advantages to having these cute little marks. Apparently, these slight depressions in the skin remind us of babies, which adults associate with cuteness. I mean, who doesn’t love babies?
All in all, for the people in the world blessed with dimples, it is more likely that others will notice their smiles more than people without dimples, and remember it better too. So if you have dimples, don’t ever be ashamed of them! Say cheese and flash those pearly whites in your next picture! You will look flawless, unique, and adorable all at the same time!
