Patriot GBB Finishes Season with 14-10 Record
On Tuesday February 13th, the Patriot Girls’ Basketball kicked off their “new” season as they headed into sub-districts.
The Patriots were ranked #2 in the D1-4 Sub-district that included Guardian Angels Central Catholic, Pender, Clarkson-Leigh, and Walthill.
They played against the Pender Pendragons for a chance to advance to the next round of subs.
They jumped out to an early lead, outscoring Pender 18-5 in the first quarter.
Although the Pendragons made a pretty good comeback, the Patriots still pulled it off to win 55-48. This was the Lady Patriots first sub-district win in the history of the Patriot basketball program.
Junior Halee Steffensmeier put up a season-high 20 points in the win against the Pendragons. Ashlynn Novotny and Kaegan Held each contributed 10.
After defeating Pender, the Patriots took on the #1 ranked, 18-6 GACC Bluejays on Thursday, February 15. It was a tight game in the first half with the Patriots down by 6 points heading into halftime with a score of 21-27.
The second half was all GACC. They continued to stretch their lead, dominating both offensively and defensively. The final score of the game was 33-54 in favor of GACC.
Novotny led the team with 11 points. Junior Beth Wiese added 6 points, and Kaegan Held and Cassidy Hoffman each chipped in with 4.
GACC went on to win the district final game and secure a spot in the state tournament.
“Last year, Pender had beaten us to make it past the first round of districts,” Held said. “Coming in to this year, we thought that we could turn things around and beat them. We believed we were more experienced and could get it done. After beating them, we moved on to the sub-district final game for the first time in Clarkson-Leigh Girls Basketball history!
“We were very excited and ready to play GACC to move on to the district final game. We started off strong, but unfortunately we weren't able to finish at the end. Even though we lost, we are proud of how the season went and how much we accomplished. Thank you fans for supporting us the whole way through our season!”
The Lady Patriots finished their season with a record of 14-10.
