Being the oldest kid in the family and having younger siblings can be hard enough when your siblings are only a few years younger, but it's another when your oldest younger sibling is 9 years younger than you are! I have two younger siblings: Grant, who is 6, and Allisyn, who is 4. Let me tell you…at my house, things get very chaotic.
Here’s what a typical morning might entail at my house.
I wake up in the morning, trudge down the stairs, and go to the bathroom to get ready for school. When I open your door, I find my sister scrubbing her baby teeth with my brand new toothbrush, squirting my lotion all over the floor, and continually knocking my face wash off the counter. I pick up the facewash repeatedly (amid the large amounts of little giggles) just so it can get purposefully knocked over again.
After the bathroom encounter, I head outside to feed and water the bunnies. By the time I get there, my brother has already successfully managed to spill a bucket full of water on his school clothes, antagonize the rabbits, and chase the cats. When I arrive, he yells in my face with clenched teeth and balled fists, “Why do we even have these stupid bunnies! I am NOT helping with chores. You are NOT my boss. You CANNOT make me!”
While my brother storms off into the house, I am left to ponder why he even freaked out in the first place. Before I can figure out the answer, I turn around to find my sister with a fist full of bunny turds saying, “Wow, I can’t believe I found all these Cocoa Puffs on the ground!”
Right before she starts to chow down rabbit poop, I slap the “Cocoa Puffs” out of her hand, saving her from getting Salmonella. Wow, talk about a great way to start my day!
Most people think it’s easier to get along with your siblings when they a lot younger, but that is not the case. When your siblings are that much younger, they purposely do things to make you angry. Then, when you can’t take it anymore and get upset and yell at them, they tell on you just to get you into trouble.
While your mom is chastising you about how you should be the bigger and more responsible person, they are somewhere in the background smirking at you. They may seem too young to have that devious of a plan, but trust me, they aren’t!
It’s a miracle if I get through a day without getting into an argument, having something spilled on me, getting punched or kicked, or watching my possessions get dirty, broken, or ruined. Lucky for me, there’s another one on the way! Oh boy!
It may seem like being an older sibling is about as awful as you can imagine, and it honestly is…most of the time. But in all honesty, I am truly excited for another new baby in the family and can’t wait for the next one to add to the chaos and mischief in my household.
