Abbi Brabec Attends HOBY Conference

More than 10,000 teens from across the country participate annually in the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership (HOBY) Conference.  HOBY is leadership conference for incoming juniors who want to be stronger leaders for their communities. Abbi Brabec from Leigh was the junior chosen to attend the Nebraska HOBY Conference this past summer. The conference took place at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska from June 1-3.

HOBY allows students to experience a life dedicated to leadership. Participating students get experience in leadership training, motivation-building experiences, and service-learning.

This year, a group of students at HOBY did a service project to help children. The project allowed them to give kids in foster care clothes and food. All the supplies and funds raised were donated to foster care children in need.

Junior, Abbi Brabec said, “HOBY is a great experience.  I liked how HOBY was ran and how everyone was getting in to the spirit of giving back to the community. I hope that other Leigh students get the opportunity to go in the future.”

There are many fun activities to do at the conference as well, like a teen dance, and several motivational speaker sessions.

Guidance counselor, Mrs. Karen Hillen said, “I am very pleased that Abbi pursued the opportunity to attend the HOBY Leadership Conference.  I feel this is an excellent opportunity for students from our school to see different perspectives and to develop leadership skills. It is also an opportunity for students to meet new people who can inspire them and possibly become lifelong acquaintances. Thank you to Leigh Community Schools for supporting this opportunity for our students.”
