Student Opinion: Changing Female Stereotypes

By: Sage Fernau, a freshman at Leigh High School

Change is defined as “the act or instance of making or becoming different.”

When it comes to women receiving the same rights in our society that men do, I believe that change is long overdue.

Being a female in today's society can be more difficult and unjust than it should be. There are many laws, and stereotypes, that are unfair to women.

As soon as females are born we are already told how to act and that it's not “ladylike” to work in traditionally male-dominated jobs such as construction worker, farmer company CEO, and other jobs that require strength.  Our culture has entrenched a mentality that men are naturally stronger, both physically and mentally, and it’s simply not true.  It’s no secret that men and women are different, but different doesn’t mean “weaker.” Traits a woman possesses that are different than men should be valued, not belittled.  I think that females should be treated equally as males and be encouraged to pursue careers, hobbies, and passions that have been previously traditionally reserved for men.

I feel that there is no better time than today for our society to commit to change for equal rights for all. Let's make a difference!
