Emersyn Urban and Korbee Wendt Win Veteran's Essay Contest

By: Leigh High School Journalism Staff

All sixth graders and sophomores at Leigh Community Schools took part in the annual VFW essay contests this year, with sixth grader Emersyn Urban and sophomore Korbee Wendt's essays moving on to compete at the district competition.

The VFW says the essay contests are aimed at fostering patriotism and encouraging a better understanding and appreciation for what it means to be American.

Mrs. Brabec's sixth graders took part in the Patriot's Pen Contest where students had to write on the theme "What is Patriotism to Me?"

The essays were judged in Schuyler, and Emersyn Urban was awarded first place.  Reann Bruhn placed second, and Carmen Malena placed third.

The high school Voice of Democracy competition was open to all students grades 9-12.  Participants had to write and deliver a speech on "Is This the Country Our Founding Fathers Envisioned?"

Mrs. Fischer's sophomore English class participated.  Korbee Wendt was judged the winner.   Zoey Van Dyke was awarded second, and Kyle Kasik placed third.

Typically the 6th grade winner and sophomore winner read their essays at the Veteran's Day program, but this year they were unable to since the program was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Congratulations to all who participated and showed their patriotism!
