Student Opinion: Why Cursive Is Still Important

By: Korbee Wendt, a sophomore at Leigh High School

As a sophomore in high school, the older I get, the more I have begun to realize how important cursive writing is. I used to ask myself these questions: When would I ever need to use cursive? Why is this something I have to learn? How is cursive going to help me in the future?

Like most students, I always wondered why this was such an important thing we had to learn and why we had to learn it. But now that I am older, I can see why, and it concerns me that many elementary teachers no longer teach students cursive.  In my opinion, learning cursive is very helpful. It is used in signatures and used to write faster.  Additionally, you need it to be able to read it on many occasions.

Cursive isn’t meant for everyone all the time, but it’s still good to know how to write in it in case you get into a situation where you have to use it. Cursive may be difficult to learn at first, but it has many benefits to it.  It may be used in your everyday life when you become an adult, which is why cursive is vital and still needs to be taught. The time you save when writing in cursive instead of print is key. Being able to read someone's handwriting when they write in cursive is also an important skill and thing to know. Studies even show that students who write their notes in cursive versus type their notes have better understanding of the concept they are studying.  Finally, developing your own cursive style is something artistic and expressive that you can take pride in.

Even though many fail to see the benefit of cursive in our modern computer and iPhone age, I really think being taught cursive is very beneficial for students’ futures and is something that should still be happening in all schools.
