Student Opinion: The Importance of CTSOs

By: Jessica Hoffman, a sophomore at Leigh High School

The month of February is CTSO Awareness Month. One might be asking what in the heck CTSOs are.

Well, the acronym stands for Career and Technical Student Organizations. Basically, they are extracurricular student organizations schools offer to provide leadership opportunities to students. A few examples of these are FCCLA, FFA, and FBLA. Since it is CTSO Awareness Month, I thought I would share why CTSOs are important and how they have impacted me.

To start off, these organizations do so much for the people involved and for their communities. These organizations develop skills for life, team-building skills, communication skills, countless memories, meaningful relationships, responsibilities, and the list goes on. They better our community because of volunteer work. One example is each year, FCCLA and FFA clean up trash off the highway. These organizations also offer opportunities that can open doors in other areas as well. This may include local, state, and even national scholarships.

CTSOs have personally impacted my life so much. I am involved in FCCLA and FBLA. I love giving back to the community and competing in events. These organizations make you feel good because you can help make your community a better place. I also get the opportunity to better my public speaking skills, network with peers, and be involved in my school and community. I think everyone should be involved in a CTSO because while sports or other extracurricular activities may not suit everyone, there is sure to be a CTSO that will fit your interests or future career path.
