LHS Quiz Bowl Places 6th of 19 Teams

By: Morgan Bunner, a freshman at Leigh High School

The Leigh Quiz Bowl Team visited Central City on March 15 to compete in the ESU Quiz Bowl Competition. They played smartly and well and did a great job of representing our school as they placed 6th out of 19 teams.

This year’s Quiz Bowl Team is coached by Mrs. Karen Hillen and consists of seniors Cassidy Hoffman and Emily Loseke; juniors Kanyon Held, Calvin Wemhoff, and Justine Thompson; sophomore Kyle Holmberg; and freshman Aubrie Hanna.

Coach Hillen said, “The team did very well.  Although they did not get 1st, 2nd or 3rd place, they ended up in the top 6.  It was a double-elimination tournament, and they won the first two rounds and lost in the next 2 rounds.  Howells-Dodge finished in first, Columbus High finished second, and East Butler placed third. Leigh lost to East Butler and Howells Dodge in earlier rounds.

I was very pleased with how the team did, especially since they were competing against numerous schools who were much larger than us (Schuyler, Central City, Boone Central).  The team members did a great job of showing leadership and answering questions that were very difficult at times,” Mrs. Hillen said.

Team member Aubrie Hanna commented, “I thought it was a really fun experience for the whole team, and I had a great time getting to compete! I think we did well overall, and I can't wait until the next one!”
