Raising Animals Is Beneficial to Kids

By: Tanyn Larson, a freshman at Leigh High School

Most people would agree that taking care of animals can be a lot of work.  Raising animals is a big responsibility for kids to have. But I believe that it is a worthwhile experience.  Kids who grow up with animals around them gain so many positive results. In addition to learning responsibility, it also teaches kids how to be a caregiver.

My family has always had pets around the house. We are oftentimes called a “Funny Farm” for this. Our “Funny Farm” consists of animals all the way from a dog or a goat to a fish or a hamster. Having these animals around our house has definitely had a lot of benefits. As a whole, this gives everyone in the family a responsibility to make sure they are taken care of.

Being in charge of an animal that is totally dependent on you will benefit kids in school and beyond.  If you do not take care of your responsibility, the animal suffers.  This can benefit them in school by helping them with responsibilities they are given like homework. They know they need to follow through because if they do not, there will be a negative outcome.

Studies have also shown that kids who grow up with pets around them have shown better behavior in places like the classroom. The animals are benefiting this because they go and play with the animal and do activities with them and that results in them being active. Being active then results in better behavior by them losing some of their energy by doing activities with an animal.

All in all, animals have so many benefits to families and kids as a whole. They result in more responsibility, more activity, and better behavior.
