Girls Golf Finishes Season at Oakland

By: Paige Kurpgeweit, a freshman at Leigh High School

On a crisp fall day in Oakland at the Oakland Golf Club, the Clarkson-Leigh girls’ golf team finished their season.

They competed against Boone Central, Fullerton, Archbishop Bergan, Shelby-Rising City, Oakland Craig, Omaha Concordia, Omaha Roncalli Catholic, Omaha Brownell Talbot, Cedar Bluffs, Arlington, Wahoo, Columbus Scotus, and Columbus Lakeview in the Class C District 2 golf tournament.

After 18 holes, they finished in 11th place with a team score of 585.  Although they did not have any individual qualifiers, the girls still had an enjoyable day of golf in their last outing. Ashly Guillen shot 128, Hazel Mundt golfed 139, and Cortlynn Cadwallader and Rosie Guillen both golfed 159.

“We all really enjoyed this season, senior Cortlynn Cadwallader said. “It was the last meet I would ever get to golf, so I really appreciated it.  We all appreciate what the coaches and all our supporters did for us this year!”

Columbus Scotus won the district shooting a 379 as a team. Archbishop Bergan was second, followed by Fullerton in third.  Members of all three of these teams advance to the state competition.  Cecilia Arndt of Scotus won the individual contest, shooting 79.

“Districts was a tough meet,” Coach Jayden Pokorney said. “Coach Meyer and I were glad that we were able to get some experience on the course on Saturday. We were hoping that it would have given us an extra edge going into the meet, but unfortunately it didn't help as much as we hoped. Regardless of the outcome, it was a fun year. We enjoyed watching them all grow and improve and we will miss Cortlynn next year!”
