Leigh Students Place Third in Class D at Scholastic Day!

By: Dee Rivera, a junior at Leigh High School

Another year has brought another chance for students to show what they know!  On March 16th, 35 Leigh students competed in this year's Northeast Community College Scholastic Day Contest. This year, Leigh placed 3rd out of 25 Class D schools, a great accomplishment!

The tests were all administered in an online format this year, and the awards ceremony was virtual.

Students are nominated by their teachers to take part in the tests, and Mrs. Gall, guidance counselor, makes the final selections.  No student can take more than two tests, and no student may take the same test multiple years.

Leigh was very close to winning the competition!  O’Neill St. Mary’s and Bloomfield tied for first place, and Leigh finished one point behind those two teams to take third.

To earn that fantastic third place finish, five students placed first in one of their tests.  Senior Natalie Brabec placed first in Parenting and Child Development, senior Aiden Miller placed first in Computer Literacy, junior Kyle Holmberg placed first in Chemistry, junior Albert Diaz finished first in Spanish I B, and freshman Izabel Hollatz placed first in Algebra I.

Two students finished second in the tests, including sophomore Jordan Noonan in Biology and senior Calvin Wemhoff.

Junior Roque Tejeda finished third in Spanish II B.

Mrs. Maddie Gall, the sponsor, stated, “NECC Scholastic Day looks kind of different now as they hold it virtually instead of on campus at Northeast, but the kids were still excited to see their scores and placing. I am so proud of them for placing 3rd out of the 25 schools who participated!”

Natalie Brabec said, “The Scholastic Day is a great time for our school to showcase what we have all learned and it was great to win first place personally and third place as a school!"

Many students on the Leigh team did not place in the top three, but still earned an Honorable Mention for finishing in the Top 5 in their test.  Earning fourth place includes senior Zane Williams in Drafting, sophomore Aubrie Hanna in Geometry, senior Logan Schroeder in Intro to Wellness, senior Calvin Wemhoff in Vocabulary, and sophomore Morgan Bunner in World History.

Earning fifth place was senior Kennedy Settje in Medical Terminology and junior Jessica Hoffman in Public Speaking.

The following are students who were selected to take the test, but unfortunately did not place.

Seniors Kanyon Held in Physics, Justine Thompson in Personal Finance, Cortlynn Cadwallader in Business English, Natalie Brabec in Music, Kennedy Settje in Anatomy and Physiology, Makenna Held in Accounting II, and Aiden Miller in Welding.

Juniors Jessica Hoffman in English Composition and Public Speaking, Kyle Holmberg in American History, Zoey VanDyke in Literature, Sydney Reeves in Introduction to Psychology, and Dalton Zulkoski in Algebra II and Accounting I.

Sophomores Gracelyn Eisenmann in Plant Science, Carter Timm in Spanish II Section A, and Jordan Noonan in Agri-Science.
