Leigh Students Belt Out Broadway Tunes at Spring Concert!
By: Izzy Hollatz, a freshman at Leigh High School
The Leigh Elementary students had the opportunity to show their parents and the spectators the songs they have been practicing at this year’s Elementary Spring Concert. This annual spring music concert was held on March 24th at 7 pm in the Leigh High School gym.
This year’s songs spanned over a century of Broadway musical hits that everyone has heard. They included some complicated lyrics that the elementary kids did a great job memorizing.
The concert started out with the preschool singing their songs that they had previously practiced with their teacher, Mrs. Cash. These included “Rainbow in the Sky,”
“The More We Get Together,” “I Like You,” and “Will You Be a Friend of Mine?”
Next on the agenda was the 5th and 6th grade. They sang “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning” from Oklahoma, “Tonight, Tonight” from West Side Story, and “76 Trombones” from The Music Man.
Following was the 1st and 2nd grade with “We’re Off to See the Wizard” from Wizard of Oz, “Do, Re, Me” from Sound of Music, “Supercalif…” from Mary Poppins, and “Tomorrow” from Annie.
Then it was the Kindergarteners time to sing. They sang “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf” from Big Bad Wolf, “Kiss the Girl” from Little Mermaid, and “Let it Go” from Frozen.
After that was the 3rd and 4th grade with “All I Ask of You” from Phantom of the Opera, “All That Jazz” from Chicago, “Be Our Guest” from Beauty and the Beast, and “Hakuna Matata” from Lion King.
Next was a wonderful performance by the 1st - 6th grade of the song, “Give My Regards to Broadway.”
Finally, the concert ended with the 5th and 6th grade band playing “Barbara Ann,” and the 6th band, who played “Nervous Notes.”
Mariah Kasik and Layla Hollatz, 3rd graders at Leigh, said, ““It was a little nerve-wracking at first, especially learning our solo parts, but then it turned out to be lots of fun!”
When asked about the concert, Mrs. Settje, the Elementary music teacher, said, “This year’s program was so much fun to write and perform. The students really got into learning about Broadway Musicals, and I feel it showed during the Concert. There are a lot of words to learn when doing songs from musicals, but the students really nailed it. They worked hard on learning their speaking lines, dancing, acting, and especially singing out. I was so proud of them.”
