Cyclone Softball Team is 14 Strong

By: Cassi Rayback, a junior at Leigh High School

The Cyclone softball team lost six starting seniors this year, but gained five new outgoing freshmen.

The softball team has 14 girls out this year. There are five freshmen, four sophomores, two juniors, and three seniors. There are also seven student managers. They are coached by head coach, Jenica Dietrich, and assisted by Tiffany Rayback and Cassandra Greenlee.

The seniors are Sydney Reeves of Leigh and Sophia Dvorak and Nessa Krupka of Howells-Dodge.

The juniors include Cassi Rayback and Kylee Compton.

Adyson Krupka, Amy Praest, Jordyn Ratzlaff, and Amaiya Ross make up the sophomores.

Finally, the freshmen consist of Jocelyn Donnelly, Eva Martin, Annemarie Slaughter, Sydney Messerlie, and Hannah Cech.

The head coach of the Cyclones, Jenica Dietrich, gave an outlook on the season. She said, “We are looking forward to a great season with some new faces to our program. We will be young, but if we make the most of our opportunities and make the easy outs, we should have a great season!”

The Cyclones played their first game on Thursday, August 18, in Leigh against Polk County. The game didn’t end how they intended, but they still learned a lot from their first game. They are a very young team and still have things to improve before the next game. The final score of the game was 2-13 in favor of Polk County.

Assistant coach, Tiffany Rayback, gave a quote on how the game went on Thursday. She said, “This was our first game of the season, and we have a very young team with only five upperclassmen. We did some things very well, and we know what we need to improve on as the season progresses.”

Sydney Reeves, a senior on the softball team, also gave her thoughts on the game. She said, “While we are a young team with five freshmen, I thought that we played well with this being our first game of the season even though the score may not reflect that, and the game didn’t go how we would have liked. We have lots we can improve and work on for the rest of the season, but I am hopeful that we continue to grow.”

Good luck to the Cyclones this season!
