LHS Students Attend Assembly on “The Alexis Project”

During the week of November 28-December 2, Leigh Community Schools celebrated
Red Ribbon Week. There was a variety of activities each day of the week to encourage Leigh
students of all ages to live drug free.
On Wednesday of this week, November 30 th , a special assembly was held in the high
school gym at 10 am for students in grades 6-12. During this assembly there were two speakers,
Todd & Jamie Calfee, who came to Leigh to talk about The Alexis Project.
Todd and Jamie talked about their daughter, Alexis, and her life. Alexis graduated from
Palmyra High School and was a sophomore at Wayne State College student when she and her
boyfriend, Chris Oberg, were killed by a drunk driver on their way to Sioux City in 2011.
The Calfees talked to LHS students about the importance of driving sober and never
getting behind the wheel when they are under the influence or getting in a vehicle with someone
who is under the influence.
LHS principal Mr. Andrew Faltys believes it was important for Leigh students to hear
from a couple who has lost a child due to drunk driving.
“When hearing stories about people getting killed from drunk driving, it can be eye
opening, but when hearing it first hand from two parents who went through it, it was earth
shattering. Twelve years have passed since Alexis was killed in a head-on collision from a drunk
driver. Todd and Jamie reminded the LHS students and staff the importance of driving sober and
never getting behind the wheel if you've had drinks or someone that is under the influence of
drugs or alcohol. If their story impacted at least one person's life, we then made a difference in
our school.”
