LHS Sophomores Watch “To Kill a Mockingbird” at Orpheum Theater

On Saturday, February 11, the sophomore class made the trip to the Orpheum Theater to watch the play To Kill a Mockingbird. The play was adapted from the novel written by Harper Lee, which the sophomore class read in the second quarter of the school year in Mrs. Fischer’s English class. The sophomore class did bake sales and worked a concession stand during basketball games to help fundraise for the trip, and the school paid for the rest of the experience.

The play To Kill a Mockingbird was written by Aaron Sorkin. The play takes place during the Great Depression in the 1930s in Maycomb, Alabama, and stars Richard Thomas (best known for playing John-Boy Walton in The Waltons) as Atticus Finch. The play followed Atticus, a lawyer, through his battle of defending Tom Robinson, an innocent black man who was accused of rape. We see Atticus’ kids, Scout and Jem, view their father’s trial through the eyes of children. The play highlights racial injustice in the South during the 1930s.

Emily Stender said, “Even though the play started at 7:30 p.m. and it was three hours long, it was such a good play. It focused on racism and other aspects of the Great Depression in the 1930s. It was worth the money and time put into going.”

Mrs. Fischer said, “Every year the sophomore class reads “To Kill a Mockingbird” but this is the first time this play has been at the Orpheum.  This was a Broadway production with excellent acting, and we were so lucky to be able to attend!  I’m so proud of the sophomores for raising money for this trip.  It was fun to go out to eat as a class ahead of time and then gain a taste of theater and culture at the beautiful Orpheum Theater with this great group of students!”
