Student Opinion: Double-Period Weight Class

Many schools, like ours, do a period bell schedule, with each class around 50 minutes long.  Others opt for a block schedule with classes around 80-90 minutes.  While I like the period schedule, some classes just weren’t made to fit ideally into that time span.

Weights is one of those classes.  When students are getting shredded in weights during the first period, many times we can’t get through our entire workout.  Sometimes we do get through our entire workout and still run late to our next class by the time we shower. If we had a weight lifting class for two periods back to back, we would have time to finish our workout, shower, and get to class on time. 

Next year, Leigh is offering another weight lifting class during fifth period. Although this will be another opportunity for students whose first period is taken up by a mandatory class to get in the weight room, it still doesn’t solve the problem of needing a double workout period for those who have room in their schedule for it. This would be very beneficial for students who are taking the class to reach personal fitness goals and not just waste a class period. 

I personally think that a double weight class would be beneficial to me because I use the first period to get stronger. A few other students and I don't waste any time in the weight room, but we still find it hard to fit everything into our workout. I believe that if we had a double class period, students would find that they are getting better results easier. 

I understand that the school wants equal opportunity for all students to get into the weight room, and that we need a balanced range of classes, but I still believe a double weight class would be an opportunity for students that are not as physically active outside of school to do something physical, and it would be beneficial to for many students that wish to see changes in their physical appearance or their strength.
