Wemhoff, Urban, and McMullin Named “Students of the Month”

This school year has brought many joys along with lots of hard work and dedication. After the high school academic awards were announced on May 10 at the end of the school year, one final Student of the Month award was announced. Eight students were nominated this month, but only three were selected. This year’s winners, and the final for this school year, are Simon Wemhoff, Ella Urban, and Kyle McMullin.

Students in grades 7-12 can only win the prestigious award once a year.  Wemhoff, Urban, and McMullin join past winners from this year: seniors Dylan Brabec, Dee Rivera, Dalton Zulkoski, Kyle Holmberg, Korbee Wendt, and Kyle Kasik; juniors Tanyn Larson, Jordan Noonan, and Gracie Eisenmann; sophomores Izzy Hollatz, Delanie Erwin, Brianne Kuhr, Brynn Settje, and Baylee Settje; freshmen Ava Kasik, Brett Wemhoff, Luke Eisenmann, Sofia Hake, and Brayden Loseke; eighth grader Kaylee Brabec; and seventh-grader Cade Hoesly.

Simon Wemhoff is a junior at Leigh High School.  He is the son of Jon and Deana Wemhoff.  He participates in One-Act and golf team.  He says his favorite subject is history because “a whole bunch of interesting things have happened in the past.”

Outside of school, Simon says his favorite hobbies are golfing and watching Netflix.  His future plans are undecided.  It is his first time ever winning the award.

“It feels really good to receive this award because it was the most unexpected thing,” Simon said.

His teachers said, “Simon is just a really nice kid who is always polite, works hard, smiles constantly, and is well-liked by everyone.”

Our next winner, Ella Urban, is a sophomore at LHS.  She is the daughter of Josh and Robin Urban and the granddaughter of Dean and Cindy Urban and Judy Blessen and the late Gary Blessen.  She keeps very busy with extracurricular activities by participating in One-Act play, golf, track, FCCLA, FBLA, journalism, dance team, speech, and Youth Advisory Committee.

Ella’s favorite class in school is FCS “because it teaches real life skills that I think are beneficial for my future.” Ella is still undecided about what job she would like to pursue after high school, but she is thinking about becoming a speech pathologist.

“This is my first time winning Student of the Month,” Ella said.  “Winning makes me feel really good because I always try hard in school, and I feel like my hard work is recognized.”

Ella’s teachers said, “Ella works hard in class and is very easy to get along with.  She is active in many extracurriculars and is a great leader.  She puts forth the extra effort to do things the correct way and gets everything done on time, even as busy as she is.”

The final student recognized for “Student of the Month” is freshman Kyle McMullin.  He is the son of Mark and Julie McMullin and the grandson of Mary Ann and the late Mort McMullin and Kay and the late Dave Reininger.

Kyle also participates in many extracurricular activities, including football, basketball, One-Act play, journalism, and Youth Advisory Committee.

Kyle’s favorite subject in school is Ag, which makes sense since his favorite hobbies outside of school are working with livestock and doing anything related to agriculture, along with playing sports and playing video games. After high school Kyle plans to go into something related to agriculture and thinks he will probably attend either UNL or Northeast Community College.

This is Kyle’s second time winning the award since his seventh-grade, and he says “it’s nice to finish the year out strong with this award, and it’s also nice to know hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.”

Kyle’s teachers said, “Kyle is an extremely bright individual with a great personality. He always seems positive and willing to help out whenever needed. He pushes himself both in the classroom and in every extra activity he is in and always has a great attitude.”

Congratulations to Simon, Ella, Kyle, and all the “Student of the Month” winners this year!
