Patriot Volleyball Takes Down BRLD and Pender

The Patriot Varsity stands for the starting lineups against BRLD.

The Patriot volleyball team was ready to put up a fight this week as they battled against Bancroft-Rosalie/Lyons-Decautor Tuesday night and Pender Thursday night in the Patriot Pavillion.

Tuesday night started off with C team playing at 5:30 and JV following. C team won both sets against the Wolverines, the first being 25-18 and second 25-20. Now it was JV’s time. They fought hard but it wasn’t enough and lost both sets for an ending score of 15-25 and 19-25.

Briana Wietfeld, JV coach said this about the game: “This game gave our girls the opportunity of understanding the important parts of the game. Our girls had some ups and downs but definitely left with their heads high. The last set of JV, the girls were bound and determined to not give up, and they slowly made their way back into the game. I was proud of them for that. They will continue to work hard and fix the little things for their next matches.”

Now Varsity's time had come. They started off the first set powerfully, building to a 13-5 lead. The Wolverines battled back but came short letting the Patriots take the first set 25-21.

The Patriots couldn’t seem to find the rhythm in the second set and fell short to BRLD 18-25. Hoping for a third set to go as well as the first, the Patriots played hard and it showed off as they went up two sets to one, 25-17.

The fourth set went just as anticipated by the Patriots as they took the last and final set of the game against the BRLD Wolverines 25-20.

Leading the game in kills was Kayden Schumacher and Cassidy Hoffman with 13 apiece. leading in blocks was Cassidy Hoffman and Kim Stodola with 5, and leading in assists was Makenna Held with 44.

Two short days later, they were back in action again Thursday night as they took on the Pender Pendragons. Like the game on Tuesday, C team started first playing two sets as well as JV and varsity to follow.

C team played well and ended up winning both sets.  They played the ball smart and kept errors to a minimum, which is what helped them take the Pendragons in two.

Jv was now up to play their two sets and though they worked hard and brought momentum up from the C team game, they couldn’t secure it under their belts and lost in two sets.

Varsity was ready to play, and it was time for them to shine as they stepped onto the court and won the first set against Pender. Having energy and a great serve receive really made them tough to beat, and the Pendragons had trouble doing that as Clarkson-Leigh took the first set 25-19.

The second set would be similar to the first for the Patriots. A few unforced errors set them back at times, but they rallied it out and ended up on top 25-16.

The Patriots could sweep the Pendragons in three if they could take this set. It was going to be a little harder than the first, as Pender stepped up their game. Some communication errors and 8 missed serves held them back. After calling a timeout the Patriots kept their heads up and battled excruciatingly hard, winning the set 30-28.

Leading the game in kills was Cassidy Hoffman with 14, leading in blocks was Kim Stodola with 3, and leading with ace serves was Bailey Lemburg and Brittany Urbanek with 2 each.

In an exciting game the Patriots had beat the Pendragons 3-0.

“It was a great game!” Kennedy Settje, sophomore, said.  “We had great connections from setter to hitters and that's what kept us in the game. We continuously work on passing in practice, and it paid off because our passing was on target for the most part. Overall, super exciting and fun game!”

This brings the Patriots’ record to 3-2 so far this season!
