Senior Spotlight: Kaitlyn Becher

It was a great day for Jill and Bill Becher on November 19, 1997, when they welcomed their first child, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Becher, into the world. Kaitlyn later became a big sister to the Becher’s second child, Logan, 14.  The Becher family also includes a dog, Kinley, and cats, Lucy and Rocket.

Fast forward 18 years, and Kaitlyn is now graduating from Leigh High School. Throughout her four years of high school, Kaitlyn has been involved in FCCLA, band, choir, yearbook, and volleyball for four years; speech and dance team for three years; One-Act play and National Honor Society for two years, and journalism and track for one year.

Through these activities, Kaitlyn has earned an abundance of honors and awards, most notably in FCCLA, where she served as the Nebraska FCCLA State President her junior year.  She has also been a State Peer Officer, a SPOT Council Vice-Chairperson, a National STAR golf medalist, Clarkson-Leigh Chapter FCCLA President, and a member of the FCCLA Board of Directors.

In speech, Kaitlyn received 6th place at state in Informative Speaking in 2013 and 3rd Place in Informative Speaking in 2014.  She was named as the Academic All-State Recipient for volleyball and Play Production.  In One-Act play, she earned several individual acting awards, and had one of the lead roles in the state championship-winning play.  She was also voted this year’s Homecoming Queen, and earned the title of Valedictorian.

In addition to her school activities and honors, Kaitlyn has been involved in the Leigh Youth Advisory Council, Travel Club (and traveled to Italy last year), 4-H, Steps at Tiffany’s Dance Studio, and St. John’s Church Luther League. She has taught Sunday school at St. John’s and been a Vacation Bible School Counselor for both St. John’s and Zion.  She has also volunteered with the library summer reading program.

Outside of school, Kaitlyn’s favorite hobbies include dancing, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.  Some of her favorites include the subject social studies, the TV show Full House, any Nicholas Sparks movie, any of Brett Eldrige’s songs, the Huskers, and Red Lobster restaurant.

After high school, Kaitlyn plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Kearney, majoring in Elementary Education.  In 10-15 years, she sees herself graduated from college, working, and having a family.  Three goals on Kaitlyn’s bucket list are to travel the world, live outside of Nebraska, and start her own business.

Of all the people who helped Kaitlyn get to where she is today, Kaitlyn says she admires her mom and dad the most.

“No matter what, they have always been there for me and have encouraged me to always be my best.  They have taught me what it truly means to be kind, hardworking, and much more.  I would be nowhere close to where I am today without them and the support they have given me,” she said.”

Before she leaves Leigh High School, Kaitlyn leaves this simple, worthwhile advice to underclassmen: “Be kind, and work hard.”
