FCCLA First Semester Happenings

By: Kennedy Settje, a junior at Leigh High School

Another year of school means another year filled with opportunities for the Leigh-Clarkson FCCLA chapter.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, FCCLA happenings have still been carrying on. Although they haven’t been the same as previous years, the chapter is making the most of every event.

To start this semester, the DLC Leadership Conference and the Fall Leadership Workshop took place at the old Leigh High School this fall with the Leigh-Clarkson chapter hosting.

The officers participated in a virtual conference, learning lots of new things to incorporate into their chapter. They watched sessions on increasing their leadership skills, acquired tips on how to make the chapter better, and gained more ideas for activities that their chapter can be involved in. The Fall Leadership Workshop was very similar as the Leigh-Clarkson FCCLA chapter took in lots of ideas on how to make better personal decisions and participate in different activities throughout the day.

Another big part of FCCLA is STAR. STAR projects are a big part of Leigh-Clarkson’s FCCLA chapter. They’ve all been working hard to get them done, and are looking forward to competing to make it to state.

One event chapter members always look forward to is the annual FCCLA family Christmas.  The traditional event engages families together for crafts, a meal, and fellowship.  But that was not able to happen this year due to Covid-19 restrictions.  Instead, the FCCLA put on a “Festival of Lights.” Local businesses and individual families decorated whatever they wanted to represent their business or self-projects. Families could drive through from 5-8 pm and look at the lights and spend time with their families.

Blood drives are another activity that FCCLA helps out with. The most recent one was December 16 at the St. Mary’s church. Past FCCLA members from the chapter came back to help, as well as current members. It was one of the best turnouts Leigh-Clarkson’s FCCLA chapter has ever put together.

Last but not least, Secret Santa is currently going on. Every year before chapter members leave for Christmas break, they participate in a Secret Santa gift exchange. Each person received a small gift every day of the week until Friday. Friday was when everyone exchanged their bigger gifts. It was a fun activity to celebrate the Christmas season.

The Leigh-Clarkson chapter is excited to see what the next chapter has in store!
