FCCLA Qualifies 11 For Nationals! Brabec Earns State Officer Position!

By: Tanyn Larson, a freshman at Leigh High School

Many FCCLA chapters in Nebraska would be excited to have one event qualify for the National STAR competition.

The Leigh-Clarkson chapter, however, didn’t just have one event.  In this record-setting year for the chapter at the State Leadership Conference, they qualified a total of 11 students in 7 different events.

Not to mention, junior member Natalie Brabec was selected to serve on the 2021-22 Nebraska State FCCLA officer team as well. At the time of publication, the title of her office is not able to be released.  The FCCLA chapter was very excited about Natalie’s accomplishment!

In a normal year the chapter would travel to Lincoln for the event, but due to Covid-19, they had to make a few adjustments.  The event this year was held virtually, and students recorded their STAR entries and sent them in for judging.

On Monday, April 12, and Tuesday, April 13, the FCCLA chapter listened in on the virtual State Leadership Conference. The conference included an opening session, keynote speaker, the results of the STAR projects, and announcements of the new SPOT officers and the new state team. The theme for this year’s SLC was “The Future is Yours, and it marked the 75th annual conference.”

In addition to attending leadership sessions and listening to speakers, the FCCLA chapter did ‘Literature for Littles’ and went around and read to the elementary students at Leigh. The books related to FCCLAs National Programs.

FCCLA advisor Mrs. Megan Hillen said, “I am SO proud of all the members of the Leigh-Clarkson FCCLA chapter. We had a record number of members qualify to compete in the National STAR competition and also have a representative on the state officer team. In spite of the challenges faced this year, we have so much to celebrate!”

FCCLA member Natalie Brebec says, "State FCCLA was a great experience for all members involved in State. The keynote speaker gave members a new way to look at life and how to change their perspective on everything. The State Officers created an amazing conference even with it being all virtual."

As a chapter, the Leigh-Clarkson FCCLA even received the award “National Program Award - Career Connections” and a Gold Chapter Award.

            Congratulations to the Leigh-Clarkson FCCLA!
