Student Opinion: The Benefits of Trying New Opportunities

By: Sydney Reeves, a sophomore at Leigh High School

In our world today, many people are stuck on doing the same basic norms because that is what we are used to. Too many people are afraid to try something new because others may not be accepting and may not agree with what you are doing. The question is though, is it okay to try something different and step out of your “comfort zone”?

I am a firm believer that it is okay to try something different even if it isn’t what everyone else does. We are all different people in some way, shape, or form, so we aren’t always going to agree or want to do the same things. Sometimes venturing out and discovering the many different options you are given is great so that you have more of an idea of what you truly enjoy.  It is okay to try a new activity, sport, or hobby even if you are pressured to do something else. I think we need to do things for our enjoyment, and not because we are pressured to do it.

Peer pressure is very common in today’s society, which is one of the reasons why everyone is stuck on doing the basic “norms”. Many students do the same sports, go to the same places, do the same activities, or even go to the same colleges instead of venturing out and trying their own things. I think that some people are afraid to try new things because others may not be accepting of trying something different. Some people also have a fear of failure. People often think “it’s going to be too hard” or “I will fail,” but failure and pushing yourself will eventually lead to bigger and better things in the future.

Expanding our minds and learning all the options that are available are essential for people to push beyond their comfort zone. Exploring our options and trying new things helps us to vanquish our fears.  Taking opportunities that we might first think of shooting down makes people get to know themselves better and have more of an idea of what is really meant for them.

For me, I know that trying different things and exploring all of the options I am given will help make me a better, more well-rounded person. Trying, even if you fail, will only make you better. If you try something you don’t enjoy, it will only help you understand that isn’t the right thing for you. I believe that stepping out of your comfort zone expands your horizons and shapes you into a better person because you will find the best option for you, not for others.
