United Way Grant Funds “Calm Corners” and More at LCS
Launch the media gallery 1 playerHaving good mental health is a very important part of people’s lives. Even young people may struggle with their mental health, and could experience anxiety attacks or suffer from depression. Recently, Leigh Community Schools was lucky and are very grateful to have received a grant to help with the mental health of students aging from preschool all the way to 12th grade.
The school received a grant from the United Way to provide social services for students in our school in need. We were able to purchase flexible seating for the elementary classes, fidgets, weighted blankets, social emotional books, and the newest addition: “calm corner” benches and posters. There are two new sets of blue benches in the elementary for students to sit, study, or have a minute of quiet.
When asked, the fourth-grade students had many great ideas on how the calm corners could be used. Many students said that the calm corners would be a great way for students to calm down if they were having a rough day. The students also said the calm corners would be a great spot to take a brain break, or peacefully read an AR book.
Mrs. Maddie Gall said, “We received a grant through the United Way to provide social emotional tools for our district. I hope to add more social emotional tools to our calm corner as the year progresses. The staff is extremely grateful for the generosity of those who funded this grant, and we excited to have these supports for our students' social emotional learning within their classroom.”
Fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Robin Urban said, “The Calm Corners have been a great addition to our elementary hallways. It gives students a place to read and complete work quietly and comfortably. The benches are also so inviting for kids and visitors to sit and share about their day.”
We are very grateful for this grant, and we hope to see many students using the calm corners in our school!
