Dee Rivera and Kyle McMullin Named “Students of the Month”

By: Alicia Holmberg, a senior at Leigh High School

Throughout the school year there have been many deserving Students of the Month at Leigh High School, and this month was no different.

The two outstanding students for the month of March were Dee Rivera and Kyle McMullin. They are both first time recipients of this award.

The first student of the month is sophomore Dee Rivera.

Dee, or Deandrea, is the daughter of Nicole Sandoval and Adrian Zacarias. Her grandparents are Kathleen and Ron Elsner of Fairmont.

Dee is very involved in school activities. She enjoys participating in basketball, track and field, FCCLA, FBLA, and One-Act. Her favorite subject in school is math. Outside of school she enjoys photography.

After graduating from high school Dee plans to attend Wayne State College to receive a Bachelor’s Degree and become a psychologist.

Getting this award feels really amazing especially when you work hard in school and you get the recognition that you feel like you deserve.

Here is what Dee’s teachers had to say about her:

--“Dee has a great attitude and great work ethic.  She is very responsible and gets along well with classmates.”

--“Dee is a very kind student with a positive attitude. She is a hard worker in all she does, and she is very fun to have in class.”

The second student of the month is 7th grader Kyle McMullin.

Kyle is the son of  Mark and Julie McMullin. His grandmothers are Kay Reininger and Mary Ann McMullin, both of Leigh.

Kyle’s favorite class is ag. class. Outside of the classroom, Kyle is involved in football, basketball, track, and FFA. His favorite hobbies include playing sports and working with his 4-H pigs.

Since he is only a 7th grader Kyle does not have definite plans for after high school. He does say he plans to attend college and work in agriculture or with sports.

“It feels pretty good to win this award because it shows all of my hard work is paying off,” Kyle said.

Here is what Kyle’s teachers had to say about him:

--“Kyle really listens in class and thinks deeply about things.  He puts forth his best effort on everything, no matter what it is. Plus, he has a good sense of humor and is fun to be around.”

--“Kyle is a very nice kid who tries very hard in class and his extracurriculars. He was a great helper as a student manager in basketball. He is fun to have in class and has a very positive attitude.”

Congratulations Dee and Kyle!
