Leigh FFA Takes on State Fair

Leigh FFA members Kammy Held, Delanie Erwin, Carmen Malena, James Groteluschen, Daphne Jedlicka, and Cody Jedlicka competed at the State Fair Labor Day weekend.

This is an opportunity to show how hard our students work with their livestock. The endless hours in the barn finally paid off this past weekend.

Delanie Erwin, a junior that participated at the state fair, said, “It was an amazing experience for all members and we had lots of success in the showering. Even though we only had 5 members competing we still had quite a few numbers as many of our members brought more than one animal.”

Erwin received 2nd in her class with her breeding heifer and 4th in class with her steer. She also received 5th overall junior showman.

Kammy Held placed 3rd in class with commercial breeding doe, 2nd in class with middleweight division wether, 2nd in class with heavyweight division wether, 2nd in class with commercial breeding doe, and 2nd in class with her market heifer.

James Grotelueschen placed 4th in class with his Dorset Ewe and 4th in class with his Hampshire Ewe.

Carmen Malena received 2nd and 6th in class with her lightweight barrows, 4th in class with her middle weight gilt, 3rd in class with her heavyweight barrow, and reserve freshman showman.

Daphne Jedlicka placed 6th in class with her natural crossbreed and 3rd in class with her southdown. Daphne also was in the top 3 for Junior High showman.

Cody Jedlicka showed his crossbred steer and participated in showmanship. He got blues in both categories.

Mrs. Alyssa Went, FFA advisor, said, “We had 6 members compete at the State Fair. We had several that made their respective drives. The competition was extremely good, but the members were better. They have put in an unthinkable number of hours into their projects, and that really shows in the ring!”
