Kasik, Malena, Fehringer Win “Student of the Month
Another month means three more “Students of the Month.” Getting the “Student of the Month” reward is a big accomplishment, and it represents how hard those students are working in school and outside of school as well. It was announced in December that senior Ava Kasik, junior Carmen Malena, and sophomore Cash Fehringer were named the new high school “Students of the Month.”
The first student of the month winner was Ava Kasik. Ava is the daughter of Joe and Heather Kasik. Ava’s grandparents are Alice and the late Fred Krenk from Schuyler and
Lawrence and the late Marilyn Kasik of Schuyler.
Ava stays busy with the many extracurriculars she’s involved in, including volleyball, basketball, track, FFA, FCCLA, FBLA, yearbook, journalism, One-Act, YAC, and National Honor Society. Her favorite classes are Child Development and Anatomy and Physiology. In Kasik’s free time, she enjoys hanging out with friends, going to concerts, going on walks or runs, being outside or on a lake, playing cards, shopping, and trying new things. Ava’s future plans are to attend college at either Wayne or Northeast to major in nursing.
You can tell Ava is very deserving, as this is her third time winning this award. Ava stated, “Juggling my classes and extracurriculars that I'm in can be challenging, so I’m happy that my efforts are recognized by my teachers.”
Ava’s teachers said, “Ava is a hard worker, not only in class but also in her extracurriculars. She is willing to seek out help when needed and puts forth her best effort in everything she does.”
The next winner of Student of the Month was Carmen Malena. Carmen’s parents are Brent and Rachel Malena. Carmen is the granddaughter of Mike and Joy Malena of Leigh and Terry and Spring Wendt of Leigh.
Carmen is another student who fills her schedule with extracurricular activities. Carmen is involved in basketball, track, FFA, FBLA, One-Act, journalism, yearbook, YAC, and 4-H. Carmen's favorite subject in school is math. Outside of school you can find Carmen showing pigs, hanging out with family and friends, and going to concerts. When asked what Carmen’s future plans are, she stated, “I am currently not set on a future career for sure, but I am thinking about being a dental hygienist.”
“Receiving this award is super exciting and validating. I’m happy that my teachers can see all the hard work that I put in,” Malena stated.
Carmen's teachers said, “Carmen is among the top of her class academically. She also does an amazing job in her extracurricular activities, especially One-Act and FFA, where she assumes leadership roles. She is respectful, trustworthy, and can be counted on for anything.”
The last but definitely not least Student of the Month for November is sophomore Cash Fehringer. His parents are Aaron and Kim Fehringer. Cash’s grandparents are Mary Becker and Dan and Ginny Fehringer.
The extracurriculars that Cash spends his time doing include basketball, golf, trap shooting, YAC, band, FFA, and One Act. His favorite class in school is Ag. Outside of the extracurriculars that Cash is involved in, some of his favorite hobbies are hunting, fishing, showing pigs, and hanging out with friends and family.
Fehringer’s future plans at this time are to go to Central Community College in Columbus for his first two years to obtain his welding degree and then transfer to UNL and study animal science in both cattle and hogs.
“It feels great to win this award and know that people recognize the work I have been putting in,” Fehringer said.
Here is what the staff had to say about Cash:
“He is a great addition to the sophomore class this year. He has a great personality and is a very likeable, friendly kid. He does great in his extracurricular activities and is always eager to learn.”
Congratulations to the well-deserved Students of the Month winners!
