Cougars Stun the Patriots

The Clarkson Leigh Football team matched up against the undefeated Cross County Cougars on October 6 for their Homecoming game in Leigh.

The Patriots and Cougars fought back and forth in the first quarter and remained tied at 6-6 despite a season-ending ankle injury for senior Dylan Higby in one of the first plays of the game. The second quarter was also a close battle with the Cougars up 14-12 at the end of the first half.

After halftime, though, the Cougars picked up the pace, and their defense held the Patriots from scoring in the third quarter. At the end of an explosive third quarter, the Cougars had a prominent lead of 42-12.

In the fourth quarter the stunned Patriots were unable to respond to the Cougars and ended up falling 58-12.

Assistant coach, Jarrod Bazata said, “Obviously the game didn't turn out the way we wanted it to. But I was very happy with the intensity and physicality that our boys came out with. If we match that intensity the rest of the season, we will surprise a lot of teams in the playoffs. There has been a lot of growth in some of our players this year, which is what we want to see as coaches.”

“We came out really strong and were able to set the tone all the way until halftime. Unfortunately, we weren't able to keep our fire through the second half, but I’m really excited to see what our team can do through the rest of the season and into the playoffs,” said senior captain Jordan Noonan.
