Kolton Held and Emma Labenz Announced as Final “Students of the Month”
The final “Students of the Month” for the 2015-2016 school year were announced Tuesday, May 3rd.
“Student of the Month” is awarded each month to two students who have really excelled in school or an extracurricular activity. Teachers nominate students each month, and then the entire staff votes on the winners.
The winners have their choice of a prize, including a parking spot next to the main doors, a homework pass, an activity pass, or control of the TV remote during lunch.
Leigh High School is proud to announce May’s “Students of the Month” as Kolton Held and Emma Labenz.
Held is a senior at Leigh this year His favorite class is social studies and his favorite activity is riding horses. Kolton has participated in football, basketball, One-Act play, speech, track and journalism. His plans for the future are to attend Chadron State College and double major in Agribusiness and Ag Education.
“This award is nice recognition, Held said, “and it’s a nice way to finish senior year.”

- “Kolton is a very hard worker in the classroom. He gets very good grades and is very involved in extracurriculars and is a pleasant kid to have around.”
- “Kolton is a very intelligent student who works hard to achieve in the classroom.”
- “Kolton is very involved in our school and represents our school positively. As a senior, he has shown a lot of maturity and growth in the past year. He takes challenging courses and is very involved in both fine arts and athletics. He has earned individual acting recognition for his role in the plat this year, he was a leader on the speech team as the only senior, and has been very involved in FFA. He is involved in the journalism program at school and he is also a student columnist for the Norfolk Daily News “20 Below” section. He is just an all-around good kid!”
Emma Labenz is an eighth grader at Leigh. Her favorite class is art, and her favorite activity is 4-H. Emma has participated in colleyball and rrack. In the future she hopes to become an ag banker.
Emma Labenz stated, “I was surprised to receive this award and it’s an honor to get this award before the end of my junior high career.”
Here are some things Emma’s teachers had to say:
- Emma is a very motivated student who always tries to do her best. She is a very polite and is a joy to have in class.
- Emma is always a positive student with a smile on her face. She’s willing to try new things and give everything her best effort.
- Emma is an extremely good student because she works very hard. She values her education and gets everything she can out of school. She is a very caring person who always has a kind word for everyone. She is an avid reader and finished in second place in the school in the reading challenge.
- Emma is a quality student who takes her work and doing very well seriously. She is an avid reader and she also works hard to maintain good grades. She is generally pretty quiet in my classroom, but she will add comments a discussion if part of a group or discussion. I enjoy having Emma has a student.
