Four Students Attend “A Capella” Honor Choir

By: Paige Kurpgeweit, a freshman at Leigh High School

On October 16, 2021, four Leigh choir members sang in the Midland University “A Cappella Honor Choir” event.

These students included sophomores Morgan Bunner, Lilly Bunner, and Gabriel Pinkston, as well as freshman Paige Kurpgeweit.

Sophomore Morgan Bunner said, “I had a great time learning three different songs and learning how to sing in a capella rather than with music in the background. This is the first time any Leigh students have attended, so I am looking forward to next year if they have it, and hopefully we get more kids to go next year.”

The groups for the event consisted of two ensembles; a large, mixed-voice choir selected by teacher nominations; and a select, 24-voice mixed ensemble, chosen by video audition submissions.

They practiced their songs and their parts for the three songs throughout the day, and  at four o’clock, they gave a performance open to the public for anyone who came to watch.

Cindy Settje, the choir teacher at Leigh and Clarkson said, “This was a wonderful opportunity for our choir students to perform alongside University students, as well as many Class A music students.  I think they felt a little intimidated at first, but then you could see the joy of singing in their expressions. I was so proud of them for participating in this wonderful opportunity!”
