By: Jessica Hoffman, a junior at Leigh High School

After decades of not having a wrestling team, many people probably thought they would never see the day when a conference wrestling tournament would be hosted at Leigh High School.

But that day did, in fact, come on Saturday, January 29th for the first time!

Clarkson-Leigh, BRLD, Howells-Dodge, Madison, North Bend Central, Oakland-Craig, Pender, Scribner-Snyder, Stanton, Tekamah-Herman, Twin River, West Point-Beemer, and Wisner Pilger all attended East Husker Conference tournament hosted in the Leigh High School gym.

The Patriots placed 6th overall in the Conference Tournament. Twin River won the Conference title, and Pender finished runner-up.

The five Patriot medalists were Morgan Bunner with 2nd place, Cooper Vance with 2nd place, Bryce Jurgensen with 3rd place, Jackson Koehn with 3rd place, and James Grotelueschen with 4th place.

Bunner, a sophomore at LHS, said, “I think the tournament went well. I think we all wrestled hard and used our technique in the right way. I am excited for districts and hopefully state. I hope we make it to that level to get better for next year.”
