Kuhr Finishes Fourth at State Speech!

After receiving second place in a tough district competition, LHS junior Brianne Kuhr, Leigh’s lone state speech qualifier, made a trip down to Kearney to compete at state alongside coach Mrs. Loseke.

Brianne did very well at state, making it all the way to the finals and ending in fourth in Extemperaneous with judges’ rankings of 1, 2, and 4 in her three preliminary rounds.

In finals, the three judges gave Brianne a 1st, 2nd, and 6th ranking for an overall placing of fourth!

Plainview won the state team scores for Class D1 and Wausa took second. Both these teams were in Leigh’s district.

Brianne said “Making it to state was an honor in itself. We had both the sweepstakes state champion, Plainview, and the sweepstakes state runner-up, Wausa, in our district. All three of our district extemporaneous state qualifiers placed in the top four at state. It really shows the level students in our area are competing at.

“It was a close race the whole day between all 18 competitors at state. I was very excited to make it to finals because I knew I was coming home with a medal. Speech really depends on what the judge is looking for, and I am super happy I placed fourth at state!”

Coach Loseke said, “State speech was an amazing experience. Brianne had to write speeches on some challenging topics, and I’m really proud of how she did!”
